facebook business pages

A few weeks ago when I realised I wasn’t doing as many blog updates as I should to keep momentum I decided to go in and create a whole raft of draft blogs with just titles, the idea being this would not only serve as a reminder for me to write them but also write about the subject I may have forgotten about further down the line, this one is a prime example :).  I’ve logged into my blog today and found a draft with the title of “facebook business pages”, with 4 words written “how crap are they…….” it made me laugh and made me decide to write the full blog post on this subject immediately.

How frustrated I became when trying to set up a business page for Lindsay Interiors.  I have used facebook personally on and off for some years and noticed through twitter that a lot of people had business facebook pages.  At the time my website design was only beginning and I felt that facebook would be an ideal outlet to publish pictures and reviews of products that I was constantly finding and getting excited about but didn’t have an appropriate place to share with anyone.

All well and good but anyone who has tried to create a business page on facebook I’m sure will agree, what a nightmare……firstly, I had to create a new account so I decided to use the Lindsay Interiors standard email account, but no, facebook doesn’t like email accounts beginning with the word admin, so I had to create a new email account for Lindsay Interiors purely to satisfy facebook.

Oh what issues I had, it was important for me to keep my personal and business pages completely separate but I never knew which account I was logged in under so I would do updates on Lindsay Interiors to find that the update would appear on my personal facebook page, not good, I would have to delete it and start again, I did this numerous times.  I found I couldn’t suggest Lindsay Interiors to friends, I couldn’t like other business pages etc etc, it was completely unusable.  I spent a lot of time trawling the web and the facebook help pages looking for solutions and eventually came across a semi helpful document – believe me this took some time to find.  I was missing a “profile” for Lindsay Interiors, so what I had to do was create a profile through which I could manage the business page of Lindsay Interiors.  Once I did that, I could suggest “like” to friends and do all the tasks I could not do previously.

I did notice throughout all the above that I was not alone, other people on twitter seemed to have the same issues so this is something that facebook really need to sort out, a clear simple set of instructions would do the job perfectly – that can be easily found I must add.

So, here I am with a great facebook business page, oh but wait, now I can’t load photos, aaaarrrrgggghhhh, for a week I tried to create photo albums, in fact I managed to create 28 (which are still there, empty but I can’t delete them).  Eventually the issue resolved but I pity anyone who is relying solely on facebook business pages to run their business.  It’s ok as a marketing and advertising tool but forget it for reliability.

Inspiration

I haven’t blogged for some time but neither have I been on FB or Twitter so please don’t feel left out.  The reason for the silence is purely down to how busy I have been.  Firstly we were away on hols for a couple of weeks, secondly, Lindsay Interiors launch is imminent so I have been inundated with deliveries and extremely busy writing product descriptions, measuring and checking everything, uploading to the website and requesting decent images from suppliers.  On top of that, 1 child had a birthday this week, the other started secondary school this week and we had some catching up to do with friends – to be fair, the catching up took place in the evenings….

My “still to do list” seems to get longer with every item I cross off, but hey, it’s all in a good cause.  Anyway, why post an update now? actually I was inspired by iTunes, well sort of.  I have sat here writing terms and conditions and the like and my partner gave me a cd to listen to which then reminded me that for at least the last 9 months I have meant to acquire Lungs by Florence and The Machine.    Soooo, I logged onto iTunes, wow, how’s it’s changed since I last logged on to the store – 2006 maybe – anyway, audiobooks!!!!!!

I have always always loved reading (yes I did mean to repeat that word), like everyone else though I lack the time to do so, my habit for the last few years has been to read when going to bed until I can’t keep my eyes open any more, but wait, audiobooks, wow, I can now work and read (ok listen) at the same time, how cool is that.  I’ll admit that maybe I have been a bit slow here with this discovery but now that I have found it there may be no holding me back, not sure how distracting it will be though……………

New PC

I thought it was about time that Lindsay Interiors purchased a PC instead of using the one already on hand which actually belongs to someone else.  Typically when I am looking to buy something around that cost I spend a lot of time reviewing forums etc to find out the general feel of the product and what people think of it.  Unfortunately I just didn’t have the time to do that today.  I went to the Dell website, looked for the cheapest business model, made sure it had the right amount of disk, memory, had a reasonable processor, the right OS (Windows 7 with XP compatible mode in this case) and Office Professional, checked a few comparison sites for pricing and discovered Dell to be the cheapest, miracles never cease, had a quick check on Quidco and found up to 10% cash back on that model so hey presto bought it through Quidco and away we go.

One slight problem.  The model I went for said it was available in silver, bronze or red.  Me being me, I decided to have a red one, but when I customised my order, I did not get a colour choice.  I placed the order anyway, I’m not going to delay the order due to colour of the lid :), and decided to call them and see if they could manually adjust the order.  What a mistake that was, I spoke with 2 different people, 1 x sales, 1 x customer support, each one said only the other could amend my order, when eventually they decided the right person to do it, they said that that model was not available in different colours at all.  I suggested they may like to change their website to reflect that, she politely told me she would immediately log a ticket with their IT dept to have that changed on the website, yeah right :).

Oh well, gonna forget about it now, in the scheme of things it wasn’t a drama, just waiting for it now whilst tapping fingers on desk.

It’s been 2 days since I wrote the above and I have a delivery date for tomorrow, woohoo, can’t wait….

Union Jack

How we have been deluged with union jack products this summer, I do actually like them – well most of them, but why and why now?  is it because we have experienced the world cup this year (however briefly :(), is it part of the buildup to the 2012 Olympics.  Of course the reason could be more simple, just a summer trend – I can see it moving on into winter with heavier fabrics and darker colours being used like velvets in black and deep purple……hmmm, reminds me of a lovely chesterfield I saw advertised yesterday in black red and white velvet, it was divine but like the Squint products you would need the right home environment to show them off to their best advantage.

I have seen some very pretty cushions around, pastel colours, sequins, denim etc etc, I even saw a lovely union jack mirror – all mirror no colours, just in union jack format which would have been perfect for our Son’s new pre-teen bedroom, wish I had bought it now.  What I did get for him was a duvet set in union jack style, all black, grey and white, looks lovely in his mainly white room with all his high gloss furniture and black glossy chair….

Harrogate Home and Gift

We are safely back from our first Harrogate Home and Gift, I will forewarn you, this post may be a bit longer than the usual as I seem to have a lot to say on the subject….

We stayed in a nice little pub in a small village about 10 miles from the center of Harrogate, it was so empty the first night we wondered how they were managing to make a living but the 2nd night an unexpected party of roughly 50 people turned up – they had been on a local treasure hunt – this meant the landlord was run off his feet in the bar and his lovely Wife spent the evening cooking for them all!, I’m sure the till total looked nice at the end of the night though :), anyway, there was a guy also staying at the pub, we’ll call him L, it was quite amusing because he must have been outside having a cigarette while we were inside talking to the landlord about Lindsay Interiors and what we do etc, L then walks in and tells the landlord that the product his company were selling at the show this year was just a big old bunch of tat, needless to say we all found it highly hilarious and indeed when we did come across L the next day at his stand it was a bunch of old tat :).  Quite an interesting character was L, he’s from Essex and obviously loves a bit of a ducking and diving, in fact I suspect he thinks you’re not properly in business unless you are doing something a little underhand on the side.  He had some strong opinions about what to buy, he strongly advised us to not concern ourselves with quality and just to buy meerkats as that is what everyone is buying right now, we obviously didn’t get our “Lindsay Interiors” pitch over to him correctly, he was of the opinion that if anyone ever wanted to buy anything of quality they wouldn’t concern themselves with independent businesses, they would just go to John Lewis :).   I think I may have switched off at that stage, but he was a nice guy and I learnt a lot from him about various suppliers that were exhibiting and the general show “etiquette”.

The show in Harrogate is split over 3 locations within easy walking distance of each other, we arrived before 10am and left at 5pm and had not even ventured into the fashion, jewelry or stationary halls, some stands were incredibly busy – in particular one shabby chic style stand which didn’t have a single item that wasn’t cream coloured in some way 🙂 It was a little weird seeing Christmas, Valentines and Easter items all on show together, I found I was continuously reminding myself to focus, focus on my first order, check quality and look for new suppliers.

We did find a LOT of new potential suppliers, some of which are on the internet, I just hadn’t come across them yet, but also some which don’t have a website let alone e-commerce facilities.  Maybe it’s an age thing because I did notice that the average age of exhibitors seemed to be near retirement or not that far off, there was a serious lack of young people….apart from us of course 🙂

One thing I wish had done in advance was to get my Lindsay Interiors “patter” down pat, why on earth was I not expecting people to ask what we did?  and what is the correct answer, do we say we are an existing or new brand, due to go live soon or just omit the fact we are not yet live – they would see soon enough if they look at www.lindsayinteriors.co.uk.  What I did tell them is that,  we are new, we wish to sell interior accessories, we will be online only and will launch in September this year (2010), this was mostly taken well,  with a lot of people happy to see we were new and wishing us luck.  But one particular guy was not happy, in fact I wish I remember the name of his company because he was incredibly rude.  They had some lovely items and we hung around for ages waiting for him to finish with a previous customer but when he came over and I asked him if we could take a brochure,  he looked at me from over his spectacles and just said one word “shop?”, I asked him to repeat what he said as I wasn’t sure I had heard correctly and he then asked if we have a shop.  I told him no, that we were entirely an online operation, he then proceeded to remove the catalogue from my hands and said “oh no, we don’t do that”, when I asked him what he meant he said they do not supply people who are on the internet, when asked why he explained in a haughty manner that if they wanted to sell online they would do so themselves.  I was so amazed I forgot my own wonderful ability to be rude at the drop of a hat, smiled and walked away from his stand, he did manage to make us feel somewhat grubby I have to say.

The show was definitely worth a visit, I actually scrubbed a supplier from my “good list” as I was unhappy with their quality but I did add a lot more to my list.  I only placed 2 orders at the show, I had saved my ordering for the show hoping there would be some good “order at the show” offers but to our surprise there was not,  everyone I spoke to looked at me as if I had lost my marbles :).  Bit silly really because if all your suppliers are online and have their products online why bother going to any of the shows?  They may be free but it’s still your time…..I think once you’ve been once and checked out the quality of the products there is not much point in attending every year, probably bi-annual would be fine, just to check out new suppliers, we are however, still going to the NEC come September, this will be my Christmas ordering although I have already started my Christmas order list :).  If we had to wait longer than 10 mins to see a rep to get an order in then we just moved on, why stand around like a lemon when you can just go home and do it online, madness.

There was a lot of reminiscing going on which seemed to take precedence over any potential customer ordering, there was a very laid back atmosphere which I was quite surprised about.  The other area of surprise is how much “tat” is still bought and sold, we have it on good authority, actually two different authorities that a LOT of people in a LOT of places are buying wooden meerkats so we should buy them on a massive scale, we were also advised to buy rubber ducks with celebrity names on them, hmmm, just can’t even imagine why someone would buy something like that but they obviously do.  However, they will not be buying them from Lindsay Interiors.  We saw a lot of suppliers for “future” trading, much much higher quality than the standard – standard being good quality in this instance – I’ve noted these for future perusal, when we can afford to buy in the more expensive items to offer to our discerning customers :), an example was a set of silver plated mussel eaters, out of all the products at the show I think these were my favourite, closely followed by clocks made from wood and fabric from sample books, each number on the clock represented by a button, each clock was unique, 6 weeks delivery though, hmmm, then some beautifully unusual pictures mainly of beachy items that had been framed very artfully, I’m sure my description has not done it justice.

I think this post has become long enough so just a quick conclusion note – overall, definitely worth going, MAY think about going next year but it seems the Spring Fair at the NEC is the one to be seen at – appears the Autumn one gets slower and less busy every year…more importantly, we would have traded for almost a year and will have our patter polished :), oh and we’ll be another year older and so will fit right in 🙂

Crafty

Hello all, I don’t think I’ve mentioned this on here as yet but when I was having my initial thoughts about my new business, one of the business ideas was to design and make very unique and original cushions and sell them, so off I went and purchased 4 very reasonably priced feather filled 18″ cushion pads. However, other ideas and inspiration took over and the cushion design idea got pushed to the back of the queue.  I have since become fed up of seeing the said cushion pads and a couple of weeks ago took the plunge and went and bought some fabric to get the cushions done.  I only bought enough fabric for 4 sides (4 cushions equals 8 sides), I wanted 2 contrasting fabrics for each cushion design but the shop didn’t have any thing suitable so i looked towards eBay, I ended up purchasing a metre of 8 different fabrics.

By this time it was end June and the “end of year” teacher present thoughts started, as I had masses of lovely fabric just turn up I decided to add to it with some felt, stuffing, dried lavender, ribbons and buttons and set on a course to make some lavender hearts for them all.  I say them all, each child has 5 teachers with various assistants and as the eldest child is now leaving for secondary school he decided he also wanted to give one to the head, the cook, the cook’s assistant, need I go on.  Hence by the end of the weekend we have 17 lavender hearts ready to go.   Each one is entirely unique and they look and smell gorgeous, hopefully the teachers et al will love them, depending on the feedback I may add them as a product on Lindsay Interiors.

Now the teacher gifts are out the way, it’s time to get back to cushion design, I feel as if my head is bursting with inspiration, watch this space for progress and pictures 🙂
